Why can I only use "Microsoft Basic Display Adapter" as my graphics driver?

Windows Central Question

I have tried using over 3 different AMD drivers (15.6, 15.7.1, 15.8) and all of them give me errors such as "Display Driver Stopped Reponding and Recovered" and also BSOD with the error "VIDEO_TDR_FAILURE (atikmpag.sys)". I would get these errors doing almost anything on my PC such as browsing or opening files however I rarely got them whilst playing games.

I found out today that if I uninstall my AMD driver it will use the "Microsoft Basic Display Adapter" and this basic driver allows me to browse the internet and other things perfectly fine without a single error. Using this would be fine however it means that I get insanely low FPS in games (Under 10FPS) in games that I would usually get 60-100+ FPS. So I really want to find a fix for this issue.

My graphics card is an Sapphire R9 280x by the way

Any help would be welcome.
