Why am I not able to send messages?

So I was trying to send a text message to my friend yesterday but when I press the send button it wasn't working. So then I switch off my phone to see if it works after that but it didn't. I called the customer care and they told to check my sms center number so I called the network provider but the number is ok. Please help.
