how can I change a number that has been put into my text history incorrectly.

It shows up correct iin the directory but always defaults to the incorrect number when I text that individual.

If you're referring to a device running Windows Phone 8.1, then in the SMS thread of concern, tap on the ellipsis (the three dots at the lower right) and the pop-up tap on "switch number" - then select the correct number from the numbers listed for that contact.
