Will WP8.1 to WP10 TP delete my files?

I read the tutorial on how to get WP10 TP, and I see it advises(?) doing a hard reset for optimal performance.

My question is:

If I didnt care about the optimal experience, could i upgrade from WP8.1 to WP10 without losing any files (specifically app specific data i.e. game saves)

1. You can upgrade and assuming nothing goes horribly wrong, which it probably won't, your data will be fine.

2. However, if you are worried about losing data, you probably don't want to upgrade since there's a chance that you'll be left with an unusable phone with the unthinkable as the only way out. My rule-of-thumb thus far is that if you are OK with erasing the phone and spending the time getting it back online, then its worth trying 10- rather than asking if its "daily driver" worthy.

The thing is, not "optimal experience" could very well mean "nothing works"
