Why does my Lumia 640XL freeze in picture mode?

When a picture is displayed on the screen, there is no method to go back to home screen. I have been rebooting phone to remedy but know there must be something that I am missing. Help?

swipe up from the bottom...twice. The home, back and search icons will appear

Swipe from the bottom once, and the usual buttons will appear in the usual place. The orientation depends...

If you swipe for the second time the buttons will hide again.
