I cannot access my emails without being connected to the internet

I can access my emails from my Lumia 640 XL windows phone if I am connected to the internet but once I have no connection then sending or receiving emails is impossible. I am missing something here?

Serious answer: Internet is required for all communication from the device save for phone calls and SMS/text messages, which need just a basic cellular signal.
