I don't know where to look. Nothing matches my programs under Start>All apps, and I can't find anything that makes me think my data files would be included.

If you did an inline upgrade, all of your installed programs should still be there. Have you looked under "All Apps" in the Start menu?
Try right clicking on the Start button and select Programs and Features to see a list of all installed software.
Also, take a look in the newly created Windows.old folder. You may find some of your data files there. Of course you could always do a search for these files by name, type, date, etc.
