What updates/setting changes should be done for the SP4 for best performance?

I was thinking about buying a new SP4 and was doing some research on it. I've been reading about the problems people having been having with them. I've seen some of the problems have been fixed with updates or making changes to the settings. If I end up purchasing a SP4 I was wondering what updates/changes I should make to allow the best results. Thank you.
