How to update the password on my phone after changing it online

I changed my Microsoft account password. Now my backups are failing so after searching online for an hour or so I came across some instructions to delete the existing backup b/c it could be corrupt. I tried that and it wouldn't work, stating "Looks like there's a problem with your Microsoft account. Check your password". How exactly do you update the password?

The phone is a Lumia 635, running 8.1 Cyan. Any advice is appreciated.

Try going to your mail app and changing the sync settings which would force the app to ask you to update the password
