How can I get to my USB recorded music files?

How can I get to my USB recorded music files.

I have tried opening with VLC, M/S media & Groove. I can see via properties that I have recorded information but it always shows "folder is empty".
I am on my fourth replacement and feel as though it is a problem on my computer rather than a defective USB Recording device

Is this music on a USB thumb drive we're talking about here? I'm not sure what you mean by "USB recording device".
