Why does my screen go black as soon as I make a call so I can't see who I am calling

My screen turns black the moment I press call. This makes it really difficult to verify who I am calling, to turn speaker on or to go through recorded messages as i can't see the numbers on the screen. I have to constantly press the centre button on the side of the phone.

This sounds like an issue with the proximity sensor.
The screen should only go black if the sensor detects something near it, e.g. your ear or finger.
I have seen this problem occur after a screen change.
Can you confirm if any repair work has been done on your phone?
