why does keyboard stay over text when i type?

When I type, for example, a whatsapp message, the preview pane no longer jumps to above my keyboard to allow me to read the message as I type, but stays under the keyboard, so I cannot see what I have typed. How do I fix this?

does this happen for all apps? Also, could you check to see if there are any pending app updates and OS updates in store and settings respectively
