How do I keep the keyboard enable when folded back?

I'm using a monitor, so I fold the keyboard back and put the surface face down so all I have is the keyboard and the monitor. How do I keep the 'keyboard folded back feature' from happening?

I've never tried this so I need to ask - what happens when the keyboard is 180 degrees to the surface, does the surface think the keyboard is not there?
