How do i "select an area' when a photo effect in superphoto asks for it?

The process of making a selection, when trying to apply some superphoto filter appears to be simple, but every time i try to do it, the program just loops and tells me to select an area again. Either the function does't work properly or i'm completely daft. What am i doing wrong?
