Why is the keyboard only covering half the screen when writing text messages

When I hold the phone in portrait to write a text message the keyboard is normal size. When I tip the phone to landscape, the keyboard only covers about half the screen. This means I can only write message when holding the phone in portrait. I have tried shutting down and restarting the phone, but the issue is not resolved.

could you share with us which OS and which phone model you're using?
Did the issue start recently or has it always been there?
