My Lumia 640 XL suddenly won't accept my password !

I have 2 Lumia phones; Lumia 535 and 640 XL.
Both have the password, which is an 8 digit numeric combination.
All of a sudden, the 640 XL has started showing the message Incorrect Password, whereas, I have not changed anything. Now the phone, after repeated failed attempts, has pushed back login attempt to 714,168 minutes, after I removed battery in an attempt to reset the memory.

I am badly stuck and deeply frustrated. Can somebody please help ?

Otherwise you need a Hard Reset.

It is odd that the PIN went wonky. I would have tried a Soft Reset if I KNEW I had the right number and it didn't take.
