Skype Preview vs. Messaging + Skype

[Windows Central Question]

I have both on my Windows 10 pc and only Skype Preview seems to actually work. What's really weird is I can't find much about either online, so I'm not even sure if Messaging + Skype is being continued or even still functional. Does it require a companion phone app to work? (I use Android). Messaging + Skype can't seem to find any of my Skype contacts while Skype Preview can.

Just really confused on how barebones and non-functional this all seems, even after some Googling. Can anyone shed some light for me?

Messaging + skype has been discontinued. Everything will be focused on Skype Preview now
