How do I stop cortana on my Lumia 930

[Windows Central Question]

I have a Lumia 930 with Windows 8.1 installed. I opted not to use Cortana when I upgraded to 8.1 but often after closing the flap on my phone case I hear Cortana saying "I don't understand the question" I then have to cancel her until the next time .
Can I turn Cortana OFF ? Is there a choice?? I have unpinned Cortana from start but no luck.

have you tried checking in Cortana settings? I think it's located in notebook settings
