No Messages in menu on Nokia lumia 550

I have just purchased Nokia lumia 550 and on the menu list there is no Messages. If I try and send a contact a text it tells me I need to download a messages app. Surely Messages should be shown in the main menu.

please make sure to check for OS updates and app updates - the messaging app is probably updating
