doing windows update and its been installing for more than 12 hours

Although it's risky, I'd force a shutdown through long pressing the power button. Hopefully, rebooting would clear the hangup or at least give an opportunity to enter safe mode or do a boot repair.

try the forced shut down as suggested and see what happens

Usually when I'm doing a major update, I make to sure to do backups and when the update is installing, I switch off internet
