can i recover a file i accidentally saved over

I worked on an existing file and saved it without changing the file name. Can I find the earlier version? Please!

As it would depend on if the application keeps a temporary back up file or not.

in most cases you can't, such as in word files or excel.
Do you have onedrive though? Set up to sync?
