windows 10 update "not able to finish installing"

after successful windows 10 update installation two days ago both my laptop and desktop underwent another (repeat?) attempt at a windows 10 update installation, which went on- stuck- until i powered off 8 hours later. after re-booting i got a message saying the update install didn't finish...?
