What is two factor authentication?

I didn't find a relevant section so, I am posting my query here. I bought a new Win 10, DELL laptop. My last laptop got destroyed my viral attack. I want to prevent any such happenings. I browse a lot and sometimes I accidently encounter malicious sites.
I need some advice on updating the firewall. How much does the Windows firewall protect me? I am planning to get an antivirus software too.
I read in a blog about preventive measures against malware and spyware and it has pointed using harnessing two-factor authentication. https://nci.ca/what-can-you-do-to-protect-yourself-from-spyware-malware-and-ransomware/ What does that mean? How can I enable that feature? I would greatly appreciate your help.
And please suggest me a fair antivirus software for Win 10. I don't want the antivirus software to slow down the system too.

Hi Wow! There's a lot going on in your thread. Windows 10 has Windows Defender and it's free. I use that and Malewarebytes Pro in real time, but I don't visit know malicious sites. I use WOT, which is free and will help you also. You may need a paid program if you're not a smart suffer. You will probably get a lot more replies to this thread from other members. You best defense is to learn how to use a 3rd party back up image program. I can see where you will get lots of replies on this topic.

Oh, thanks, holdum333. That wiki link was helpful. Yeah, I a not a smart surfer and my technical knowledge is also limited. I was considering a paid solution. But, I would like to avoid that if possible.

Hi If you don't want a to pay for a anti-virus, I recommend Avast or Avira. I have used both of them. I would avoid AVG. It is resource hog.:wink:
Windows Defender has really improved in my option with W10. I suggest a layered plan. By that I mean a anti-virus and a malware running together in real time. I like Malwarebytes Pro and Windows defender.The best advice that I can give, is to learn how to use a 3rd party image program. I use Macrium Reflect.
