Windows Central Question

Well it all started today (1/4/17) when I cut my phone off this morning to preserve the battery life, however some point throughout the day the phone accidentally got turned on and it started to update itself. When I looked at my phone, instead of continuing to update, it showed the update icon along with a thunderbolt, which I assumed was an indication that I needed to charge my phone for it to continue to update. Unfortunately I wasn't around my charger, so I couldn't charge the phone for approximately 2 hours (since the time I found out the phone was trying to update). I got my charger and plugged my phone in. The icon stayed so I left my phone to charge. I came back in an hour and the icon disappeared, but the phone was off. I didn't attempt to turn it on because I thought the phone was in the middle of a restart (what a lot of updates have done in the past on my phone). I left again for another hour and the phone was still off and not turning on.
Things to know so you can know more about my problem and give me a solution that can help: The phone has a battery I am not able to remove. I've had the phone for about a year but I have done particularly well about not leaving my phone on the charger for too. The my phone is a Alcatel OneTouch FierceXL (not sure there is enough information about my phone). The icon that was showing up on my phone had a lighting bolt and a gear but the gear wasn't turning and the lightning bolt was bigger than the gear. My phone plays a big part of my life so if you could help please state anything.
Thank you

I understand your problem. and yes, your guess is right. your phone was not charged then, and hence the update failed.

okay, so now, charge your phone. don't worry about overcharge for now, just do it for the next 3 hours. see if it starts to work.
if it doesn't, then after 3 hours of charge, press and hold the power button and the volume down button for 10-13 seconds till it vibrates and restarts.
if it does that, connect to the charger right away and let it do whatever it has to, on its own. it will probably show the gears and start to update.
if that doesn't happen either, then I am afraid, there is only one thing that you could do to your phone, and that is reset it. yes, you will lose all your data on your phone.

this is the download link of the windows recovery tool.

download this tool on your pc or laptop, and connect your phone to it, and do as directed in the faq.

hope it solves your problem.

but first things first, try to charge your phone and see. at least for 3-4 hours.

hope this helps.
good luck.

If you do get the device charged... You could try a Soft Reset to try and get the update to reinstall itself. This would be done by holding the Volume Down + Power buttons until the phone vibrates and reboots (about ten seconds).

If Soft Reset does not install the Update, then do as Tejas suggests and use the recovery tool.
