Is sign in failing during setup?

You didn't say, but it sort of sounds like the device is already set up and you are trying to add an account...

Can you provide more details?

No, I am unable to sign into my MS account to do anything at all. For ex, I would like to upgrade the phone from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10, but I am asked to sign in with my Microsoft account and no matter what I do I am unable to. I have reset my password 100 times now trying to login to my MS account on this phone. Again I have no problem signing in on the Desktop or the other Cell. And no, skype is not linked to the other phone. I had to download it and installed on this junk cell that is no longer used. I did it to see if the problem was with the new phone.

OK...

Let me see if I have this right.

The 640 XL is all set up (you have a Start Screen), but the system keeps asking you to sign in. Is that the same account that the phone was set up with?

If it is not the same account, whose account is on the 640 XL when it was set up? A secondary account of yours? A previous owner's?

Yes I have a start screen. Yes it asked me to sign in to Windows account to update all the apps. Yes, this is the same Microsoft account I used which is my Skype login. No previous owners, brand new phone out of the box.

Here's the Help Page: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us...or-create-microsoft-account-on-my-lumia-phone

The most likely culprit is with Date and Time. Verify that they are correct. If not correct, set them to proper values. If they are already correct, then you can try a trick...

Manually set Date and Time to a random point years in the future. Reboot. Set Date and Time to correct values and reboot again.

Hello specialist?!
It is very simple, I have exactly the same issue, this is ridiculous !
I have used "Windows Device Recovery Tool " to reset my lumia 640XL" back to 8.1.
Followed the instructions, quite straightforward but for the exception than when the phone ask you to connect to you microsoft account I've got the following message (By clicking "Sign in") : "Can't connect , We can't connect at the moment. wait for a little while and try again".
Nothing to do with our wifi connection, nothing to do with any password etc... but everything to do with Microsoft again showing itself incompetent and we are quite frustrated now.
So my solution will be straighforward:
- FIRST - I am going to go on Android (oneplus3)
- SECOND - I am going to wait "a little while" days or perhaps 1 to 2 weeks max.
- THIRD - After that time, I am going to throw out the phone and for my personal satisfaction use a hammer to smash it.
Thanks Microsoft for your continuous incompetence on mobile phone and the money I have wasted when I bough that phone!

This has been a constant problem for yrs,I found one here on wp central from 2013 & yet your loser company still haven't fixed it...we've known for a loooong time that you couldn't care less about your customers, unfortunately your company is big enough to afford that loss of income but when you also become so incompetent that you can't even fix thing with yrs to do so I'll sure think twice about buying ANY THING from you again..but hey you got what you wanted...Windows Phone dead, hope you're happy :eck:
