windows phone app is not seeing files on SD card

I would like to save my photos to my computer. However when I connect the Nokia Lumia to my computer, the computer isn't seeing any files on the sd card.
I have tried using the windows phone app on the computer as well as just looking through file explorer.
Any ideas on what is going wrong?

Hi, it may be a problem with your SD card.
Can you remove your SD card and plug directly into your computer or via a reader?
