Windows Central Question

The home network I have instantly connected. As I explored my device, I opened the SIM card slot and pushed it back in. Now it says I need a SIM card to connect to the internet. Why did I get access to my network before, and how can I get back?

This is strange.
Your phone seems to be looking for a data connection if I were to venture a guess.
Try shutting off the phone (power down) then remove the SIM and power on.

If the phone sees wi-fi and no SIM then shut off the phone and reinsert the SIM completely and see if have data and wi-fi available.
After this if you still have no data then I believe your SIM has been damaged.
