Windows Phone 8.1 and Facebook messenger, how much RAM?

The store website says 2GB of RAM is now needed, but does this only apply to Windows 10 phones?

Does anyone know if an older phone running windows 8.1 with 512mb of RAM would have any luck with Facebook messenger? Otherwise could anyone suggest a work around?

Windows Phone 8.1 is different, and not so RAM hungry, so it should be fine.
