Not getting any error message(s) to go along with it such as "sorry, something went wrong"? Have you tried any other camera apps by chance?
Could first try a soft reset and if that doesn't work, a hard reset might be in order. No guarantee either will resolve your problem but will eliminate a possible software glitch as being the culprit.
When I first got my L1020 it lasted 8-days. Whilst using camera to take a photo it just quit leaving me with a black screen, gave similar message as described above. Turned out camera module gave up the ghost requiring replacement.
