Does anyone know roughly how long support for w10m on a Lumia 640 XL will go? 2018...2019? Or do I need to get a 950 for support for the next year or so? Thanks!

If I remember correctly, the Lumia 640 XL might get the "Fall Creators Update", which is essentially a huge massive amount of bug fixes, optimizations, and two features. But beyond that it's not guaranteed. You'll get security updates until three years after the phone has been released, ideally, but at this point Microsoft may only be releasing necessary security patches. The FCU is the last "okay we've done the best we can with this" before it's pushed to a very distant back burner. Set on low. And it's an electric stove. Running off a bunch of AA batteries. Inside of a freezer. Inside of a larger freezer. And the freezers are on fire.

The 640's should get the FCU. I have a 640 running the Fast Ring and it is running fine. I cannot see why it would not get the release version.

At this point you may want to stick your 640 on the Fast Ring and leave it on there.

I have a 640 on Fast Ring and my daily driver 950 on Release preview.

I would look for another options like iphones or android phones, since there are no guarantees how long W10m will be supported, is very likely MS could just shut down W10m completely soon and therefore any update and bug fix canceled and declare the OS as discontinued.
