is it possible to put a "home" charm that will navigate the user straight back to the original item so they don't have to swipe back?

In a panorama you can programmatically navigate to any pane. So if you want to put in a button in a pane or on the app bar to go to the back to the first pane in a panorama then you definitely could do that.

I'm not sure you'd want to do that though. If you put analytics around that functionality you'll find that users don't use it. Panorama's are circular, so if you get to the end and swipe once more then your back at the beginning. The same can be said with Pivot controls.
