Nokia's first device after Microsoft is an iPad mini clone that runs Android | The Verge Nokia has came back into the device game with a Tablet. But not with Windows, with Android. (Larry Page is having a party because Nokia just put another nail into the Coffin of Microsoft). What the hell is going on up there in Redmond? Satya Nadella seems to be sleeping on the job. No way in heck would Steve Ballmer let Nokia do this To Microsoft. He would sue Nokia for Violating there deal they had in place. Keep the Nokia name on the phones and try to buy out the whole company. People ask why Microsoft is having problems in the mobile realm? This is one of many examples. Ballmer should have sued Google directly to the point that they could not run android anymore, and Microsoft could have took over and improved Android to the point that it ran smooth. But because of Paul Allen and others who wanted no more windows, but more programs for IOS, and Android. We are going to see the untimely death of a great software company and Larry Page and Sergei Brin are going to cheer Microsoft's down fall. And it is all because Satya allowed Nokia to Make a google based Android tablet.

Chill.. The Nokia name was given to a Chinese company for branding.. This tablet is NOT made by Nokia.. I guess if Nokia give their branding to cheap companies it will degrade their brands value..

To make things simple for winrayjay:-

Microsoft did not buy the entire Nokia company, only the unit that makes handsets (mainly Lumia). Nokia (as a separate company) is free to do what it wants (except create phones for a couple of years).

Nokia is not breaking any agreement. Microsoft is not suddenly creating Android hardware.

I am surprised Nokia are doing this, not because it's using Android, they sell Here maps to anyone, but because they are even thinking about hardware even if it is farmed out to a Chinese company, I would have thought the last thing they needed as a company was to be involved with hardware.

Good luck to them by the way, but to be brutal it's got nothing to do with Windows so not really interested in what they are doing, if Samsung make an Android tablet do I care, not really so if Nokia do the same what's it got to do with me, I am not going to buy one.

There is nothing surprising about this. Daniel Rubino mentioned last week in an article that Nokia would not manufacture smartphones and I composed a reply which annoyingly got lost when my phone decided to lose battery.

Nokia is not a manufacturer any more so they won't make phones for a while, but they still own a name which has huge brand recognition and this is an asset in itself to profit from via licensing. And that's what the suits who now run Nokia are doing. In the UK, one of our retail stores, Argos, owns the license to Bush, an electrical brand popular a few decades ago. They now produce a lot of electrical goods using the Bush name and even brought out a Windows Phone. So in my opinion we could even see a Nokia branded phone in the future but this is all it will be and all what this tablet is - a Nokia branded product.

Microsoft will have known about this and this is why they will have been renaming everything from Nokia to Lumia this month of all months as well as hastily brought out a Microsoft branded device.

The real winner here is actually Foxconn. They get to do what they've been doing for a long time which is building other peoples hardware, but now they get to do it for themselves but have a well known and respected brand to sell under. While I wouldn't buy it I expect it will be a quality tablet. Could be an interesting partnership.

They are not involved in hardware, just trying to license their name, if a new company wants to enter hardware business it would be better for them to use Nokia's name and brand value rather then creating and establishing a new brand.

I know they are no longer making hardware (They sold the hardware making stuff to MS as we all know) but what is left is a smaller company specialising in software, so now they lease the Nokia name to another hardware maker to make basic stuff that is being made all over China and other countries, I would have thought they would be better off keeping the name for the stuff they actually sell.

The example of Bush is a good example, it used to be a well respected electronics company but now lives on in name only on cheap goods, not the best way to protect what is left of the Nokia company.

But as said god knows why I am talking about this, it ain't Windows, it's just another device I have no interest in made by a company in China with the name of an EX phone maker stuck on it.

Nokia BRANDED isn't the same as Nokia MADE. Only the most rabid ****** would buy a device for basically the ink used to print the logo. But people are stupid so it actually may work out for them.

But most people don't read sites like this and will just assume it is made by Nokia.
Plus the company making it make a hell of a lot of devices for other manufacturers and parts etc. Hardly a small cheap company.

Didn't Foxconn also manufacture some iPhones too?

Why is this in General Microsoft discussion? This has absolutely nothing to do with Microsoft or Windows Phones.

The remnants of Nokia, sold out their brand to a Chinese company to make another Android tablet to throw on the heap of Android tablets that exist out there that aren't selling in any great degree. End of story.

maybe we should give it a chance. it's not in the market yet. we dont know its hardware quality. Nokia shall retain hardware quality to keep their brand name untarnished.
keep in mind, most of the world praise and pays for apple products for quality of hardware; and they are produced in China only. china does not mean low quality. it depends upon who buys and what they keep as quality standards.

seriously tho...why this matter so much? lol it's just a tablet with Nokia BRAND on it! it's pretty clear:

"Nokia is partnering with Foxconn to build the N1, licensing the industrial design, Nokia brand, and Z Launcher software to the device maker. That’s not a surprise move given the company’s clear intentions to enable third parties to build products with the Nokia brand, but it does mean Nokia doesn’t own all the manufacturing or sales of the device."

what it seems to me is that Nokia is doing this in order to have hardware to sell their software - in case, they are developing a launcher for Android, aside from their other well known software products. I mean, they need to showcase their brand new launcher somewhere, and since they can't make phones until around 2016, they went for a tablet!

now if it will really be a success is a whole different story, the Android market is saturated with lots of launcher options!

Nokia is involved in the market again, away from the lethargic MotherShip. That means they are designing, engineering, and doing positive things again , instead of just waiting to be absorbed and forgotten.

kudos to the spirit they have.

it would be great to see them producing ios, android, errrr what are we calling "the operating system formerly known as Microsoft Windows phone" now? , BlackBerry and Symbian devices.

I'll be ready to purchase the waterproof android variety as soon as it's on sale.

Word is it will hit China first for $249 ( US ), it's not going to sell that well. It has to jump over many many $99 Tablets to make a dent anywhere.

No worry.....I would say if you have a Nokia 2520 hold on to it, get it protected. It's value just went up. The 2520 will become a collectors item soon.
