Tablets usable for work?

Are any of the new tablets coming out usable for work?
I get the fun factor: play games, check your email, watch videos, listen to music, etc.. (although I'm kind of an outdoorsy type guy, I can't see me dragging a tablet around in the rough)..

I was looking at the notebooks at Bestbuy, and they seem like a much better value.. larger screen, DVD burner, large storage, acceptable battery life (5-7 hours), plus an i5 or i7 processor where you can actually get some work done (I use 3DSMax and After Effects daily)..

I don't want a notebook AND a tablet AND a phone.. too much to carry around..

Well to be honest I do not know what 3DSMax and After Effects are but it sounds like video editing stuff. If you are looking for power in a computer I personally don't see a power house tablet coming out. For the things you are wanting to do I would go with your notebook option/desktop replacement. It may be poosible to get a tablet like you want but im sure the price and real portabiliy would be very limited. I am no professional but this is what I think.

Depends on what you do for work. I know a lot of people who use iPads for work, and the Surface--with Microsoft Office included as standard and the keyboard covers--will be a great tool for white collar dudes like me.

If you need a mobile workstation to do 3D rendering, then no. Stick with a Thinkpad.

Acer is releasing a tablet that has a keyboard dock you can use that makes it notebook-ish. ASUS has a line that are notebooks first and foremost, but their screens can detach and be used as a tablet. The main difference is that the Acer set have small, light keyboard docks, but the keyboards are small and not so great. I don't remember if they even have trackpads, but if they did they were small, and they have a few ports, but not too many. The ASUS line are higher powered machines with full sized notebook keyboards, a bevy of ports, and all the notebook features you expect. But they are thicker, heavier, and likely more expensive than the other line.

Asus' Transformer Book allows users to switch between a notebook and tablet by detaching the screen from the keyboard. It works in a similar way to the Transformer Pad tablet, except this one has all the features of a Windows notebook because it's not running on Android OS.
Powered by Intel's Core i7 Ivybridge with 4GB DDR3 RAM, USB3.0 connectivity and SSD storage, Asus said it will be the lightest and thinnest tablet on the market and will come in 11.6in, 13in and 14in variants.
