Yup. No longer driving the 1520 daily. I'm not giving up on the ol' gal, just re-purposing her. In the spirit of this long dead thread, http://forums.windowscentral.com/nokia-lumia-520/336534-project-five2oh.html, I'm starting a new one. Supersized in every way.

Imma turn this beast into a no-SIM picture taking machine and a travel companion.

Already done:
  • WDRT back to 8.1 + Denim
  • Stripped out all non-essential (for my purposes) apps
  • Loaded up on Camera and edit apps
  • HERE Suite installed (Maps, Drive +, Transit, City Lens) and downloading maps
  • Translator installed and language packs downloaded
  • Finalizing settings and Start
  • I have a Sandisk Ultra 32GB Class 10 SDHC card to dedicate for this
  • I have a great dash top mount for nav
  • I have a car charger that will add charge even with nav on-screen
  • I have tripod mounts and tripods
  • I have a cassette to 3.5 audio jack for in car use

I'm still on the fence about using up space for media, but probably will have some music on there at the very least and possibly video as well because the 6" FHD screen is so nice.

[NOTE]This project has been expanded as I have included a Lumia 1020 alongside the 1520. IMHO an ICON or 930 would also serve well. Adding invitations to 830 owners as well. Great camera and many of them will be moving to new daily drivers...

Anyone dedicating their old Windows Phone to Camera Only duty is welcome to participate and add their experiences, results, tips, tricks, etc.[/NOTE]

Re: After Party: 1five2oh

I've got a great dashboard mount... It has a weighted base, a non-slip pad and a clamshell design. Holds the phone very securely and doesn't move. Keeps the phone handy to my line of sight while driving. I've long loved this for turn-by-turn:

Re: After Party: 1five2oh

Just a small advice of warning on my part friend. Car mounts do not play well with phones out in the sun for long durations of play. Especially if you live out in the sunnier climes of the world, or get them sunny times anyways. And this, especially true so if you like your pretty phone wrapped nice and true in a protective case. I recently had the chassis on my beloved ATIV SE crack because it spent a good 6-7 hours out in the sun playing satnav with me squeezed into a carmount, and layered in a dual layer incipio case. :/ Lets just suffice it to say that I'm still not over my heart break on this one. :'( I wouldnt want that happening to anyone else's favorite device either. :/

Heat and uneven/constricted expansion can do bad things to a phone. Or a laptop. Or electronics/appliances. In general.

I've used this mount plenty often with the 1520 and for long stretches of travel. It actually shades the device a bit depending on angles. I've had no discoloration or other problems yet.

Re: After Party: 1five2oh

Don't all jump on me at once, but..... :D
Is the 1520 camera better on WP8.1 than W10M?

I believe the algorithms on 8.1 are superior. I've seen others post the same...

Certainly shot-to-shot and processing times are better on 8.1. That is empirically proven.

^^^ Still have plenty of space to add Apps, Maps and Language Packs to internal storage as needed. Even a 16GB AT&T variant should feel roomy with this setup.

D'oh... Forgot Slowly. Installing now.

Grrrr... Looks like Slowly is gone from the store. Will investigate alternates.

Re: After Party: 1five2oh

What the chummy berries is Slowly anyways? A slowmo video recording app, if I am correct. Or a time lapse. The opposite things I know. But something of the sort, right Rumored?

+1

you might need to put in a sim as well, for accurate location tracking. standalone gps tracking takes time and is slow compared to network and gps positioning together. :)

Re: After Party: 1five2oh

So what are you doing about data with this device? Even with downloaded maps, isn't data required for the GPS aspect?

When I tested this with a SIM-less Lumia 520 about twenty months ago, the downloaded maps were all I needed. No data and with Location enabled I got accurate speed and location readings with successful turn-by-turn nav on a 400 mile round trip car journey.

Data is required for traffic alerts and "My Commute," but isn't necessary for other functions including search for addresses and businesses.

Another benefit, for me, of being back on 8.1 and using HERE is that I can download the voice pack I want for my turn-by-turn assistant. I much prefer the English/UK/Male voice as the accent gets my attention. The same voice was named "Martin" back in the Symbian days. I just find it helps to have a voice that cuts across anything else going on in the car and I love hearing pronouncements about any "roundabout" that might be on my route.

Re: After Party: 1five2oh

So I've been having a problem with Translator app. The tile gets grayed out and the entry in All Apps list becomes unresponsive.

I think it is an update to the Chinese (Simplified) Language Pack. Testing that theory. Reinstalled for the 3rd time and downloading packs one by one with wait times inbetween.

Took these this morning using my white 1520 running W10M, version 1607 build 351. Stock camera app. No editing.
