Of all the accessories for the Elite x3 the HP Elite x3 Lap Dock is certainly the coolest. The term 'mobile extender' is an accurate description when you realize how it works, but it is more easily thought of as a folio or light laptop.

The Lap Dock is a 12.5-inch 1080p (FHD) LED display with a keyboard, 47 WHr battery and some ports and speakers.

It has no processor. It has no RAM. It has no storage.

Instead, users will connect to the Mobile Extender using the Elite x3 and wireless Continuum (or wired if preferred). Since Windows 10 Mobile can scale-up to a full PC, the Mobile Extender becomes like an ultra-light laptop.

The HP Elite x3 Lap Dock has some impressive specifications (pdf):

I wish it had touch screen, so it could also function as a regular tabled. I'm still interested in the device as-is though.
There's one thing that worries me:

Even though HP claims it's a "premium notebook experience without the notebook price tag", I've seen some pretty steep prices. According to WindowsCentral, the price difference between the complete set (phone+desk dock) including or exluding the lap dock will be 1199 - 729 = 470 euro!

And this is only the bundle price! Bought seperatly, the price might go up even more!

A simple notebook, like the HP stream will set you back about 230 euro.
470 euro will buy you a somewhat more decent model, like the HP 205 G5,
These aren't the greatest laptops ever, but you will be able to use these to use the Windows 10 built-in continuum function to use your phone in the same way you would yse the lap dock.

I think 470 euro (or even more!) is a lot of money for a device specifically tailored to be used with my specific phone. For a device I probably need to throw away once my phone reaches end of life.

Do you guys think the Lap Dock will become very popular at this price?

For me, it'll be hard not to have a full Windows 10 desktop operating system.. I need things like the Command Prompt and to be able to "\\servername" to local machines, etc, and run traditional Windows 32-bit applications. We already have a hosted Citrix system for our own internal application--I expect that will run very well....

I'll still certainly try one.... there's enough use of it to get it.

Wifihifi.ca mentions a price for the seperate device:

On its own, the
Elite x3 is simply a high-end (US$699) Windows 10-based smartphone. What sets it apart is HP's strategy of promoting PC-like capabilities, based on the Continuum feature built into Windows 10. Pairing the Elite x3 with HP's Elite x3 Lap Dock (starting at US$599) or Elite x3 Desk Dock (US$129), will allow the smartphone to be used like a PC, with full Windows capabilities, while retaining the setup and data store of their phone.

I'm definitely not getting one.

For anyone interested I got to see the phone, dock and lap dock from our HP enterprise rep yesterday. I'm really trying to get them to send us a demo but based on what I saw I can understand why it's not available yet.

They are still actively tweaking things with the phone. Scrolling was pretty smooth but it had a few hiccups. The screen is pretty damn nice. Both hello and fingerprint were not active so I couldn't test that. Likewise, I was not allowed to take pictures to post here. The camera itself I found to be acceptable but I realized how spoiled I've become with cameras on the 950 or Galaxy Note 5.

The lap dock had a bit of weight to it but was sleek. I liked the fact that when opening the hinge creates a subtle tilt for typing. Firmware was really sketchy on it. The trackpad didn't work at all and continuum not only had issues connecting but it also dropped connection once. Screen was acceptable, not a touch screen of course. HP workspace was actually pretty slick - I got t use project and Visio a bit. No word on pricing. I couldn't get the 950 to connect to the lap dock at all but again, there were some firmware issues. The rep had one of the mobile specialists with him who stated he's flashing firmware revisions all the time on it.

I have a Lumia 950, 950xl, and HP Elite X3 across my family/members. It will support any. However, the Elite X3 is the only one with Device Hub to update the firmware, and it is installed into the image, not able to be downloaded. I am talking with HP about this. If it is truly meant to be an full UI accessory, we all need Device Hub.
I also had issues using the wired connection with my first L950 (dual-sim). Firmware update helped this. The L950xl(dual-sim) , Elite X3 and other L950 (ATT) had no issues.

I still*can't figure out how to get a subscription key and license for HP Workspace. Without it I am only enjoying the normal continuum experience. Good, but I want multitasking.

I just hope the hp elite x3 will be updated to take advantage of the upcoming windows 10 on arm's x86 emulation ( cobalt ) so you won't have to rely on HP workspace.

This is super helpful! Thanks. Do you have any updates from HP? I really want to buy it and use it with my 950 via Continuum. Any thoughts? Thanks!

I got a call from a third party to set up workspace. It's odd. They have my info from my initial inquiry to HP. But, they have to set a call back from a person who will then deal with setting it up with me. And that call back is delayed for a week from now. The whole process just feels unnecessarily cumbersome. I just want to play with the multi tasking and see if I like it. You should be able to do that on your own.

Does anyone know if it would work on a Desktop PC? (or the Intel Skull Canyon)
With one cable, getting video, keyboard and mouse?

does anyone know what the part number is for the cable that connects the X3 to the Lap Dock?
This is supposed to be a usbc to usbc cable but mine didn't have one in the box.
