I have exactly the same problem. It's still here since DP 8.1.
I have twitted to windows phone support but they said it's hardware related but I don't think so. However, I'm still using it in this condition.

By the way, I'm on 8.1.1!

Well, finally my htc 8s is back !! And I have to say that it still has has wp8.1update even tough my carrier hasn't rollled it out!!
