No, I didn't download the tool. Should I? Can u please post a link?

As I read in the internet, there should not be any software needed for mass storage support (Newbie Q on WP8 phones

When i plug my WP8 in, it pops up a window, and theres a link to the app. I don't recall trying to use the WP8 device before downloading it.

Solution: The USB cable didn't work :-(

Glad that I got a new one, and anything is working!

    Glad you found that.

I've been using a cheap USB cable for ages with my WP7, recently started using the cable that came with my 920, and i swear my WP7 charges and syncs far quicker.

Turns out you do need to spend money on decent cables
