***Newest update 15 MAR 2013 (8862) added***
I have included the 8860 and 8862 update into the instuctions below. If you are starting from 8858 then go to the bottom of this post for other instructions.

This is how I updated my T-mobile US HD7 that was running version 8107, which is the last one T-mobile US released for this Phone, to WP 7.8 (8858). While there are already instructions out there on how to do this I am going to tailor this to the HD7 on TMO US to eliminate confusion. I am going to try to make the instructions clear and organized. I know that some people have issues following the directions that are on XDA and such. Remember I am not responsible if something goes wrong. So here goes.

**Make sure your HD7 only has English. To make sure go to Settings then region + language then Display language. For mine I cannot change this as English is the only one on my phone. Now if you have other languages you will need to do some extra steps to get the Language files. I will not cover this but you can look on XDA and WPCentral has an article on it. If you only have English you can proceed**
**My phone is on version 8107. If yours is higher skip the steps to the version you are at. If yours is lower the you will need to get the other CAB and language files from XDA, If you are on 8107 and have English only the proceed**
**I am running Windows 8. These steps should work for vista and 7 as well. If you are running XP then please reference the post from Aussiedog61 below**

What you will need:
1. Zune (installed in the default location)
2. USB cable
3. CAB files **Do not uncompress these files. Leave them as they are**
4. Language Files**Do not uncompress these files. Leave them as they are**
5. CAB sender
Here is what I did to keep thing organized and have a successful update:
1. Create 2 new folders on your desktop. 1 titled “phone updates” and 1 titled “CAB sender”
2. Within the phone updates folder create 7 new folders titled “8107-8112”, “8112-8773”, ”8773-8779”, “8779-8783”, “8783-8858”, "8858-8860", and "8860-8862". This is where you will store the CAB and Language files to keep them organized.
3. Download the WPupdate tools zip from here http://depositfiles.com/files/c9t0p5pte This was shared from MobileTechWorld
4. Once you download this extract it in the CAB sender folder you created on your desktop. Then cut the “if needed install this tool” folder and paste it in the phone updates folder but leave everything else in the CAB sender folder
5. Download the CAB and Language files for the 8107-8112 update from here. (I got all of these links from XDA and it is because of their hard work this can be done):

16. Now place this in the 8858-8860 folder you created earlier in step 2
17. And finally download the CAB file for the 8860-8862 update from here:
http://download.windowsupdate.com/msdownload/update/software/dflt/2013/03/diff-7.10.8860.142-7.10.8862.144-armv7-retail-microsoft.plustuner.pks_d802531eab4e9bce3ab747805ea7e33fc8cd29bf.cab
18. Now place this in the 8860-8862 folder you created earlier in step 2
19.
Now open Zune, wait for it to fully open, connect your phone and wait for the phone tab to show, once it shows close Zune.

20. Now the fun starts LOL. Navigate to the “8107-8112” folder you created. Copy the files from here (should be 3 this time) and paste those into the “CAB sender” folder.
21. Now within the CAB sender folder there is a folder called “tools”, open this, now find the application called “UpdateWP”, run this. (you will see a DOS screen flash and disappear)
22. Now back out of the tools folder to the main CAB sender folder and run the “WP7 Update Cab Sender” batch file.
23. A DOS screen with to CAB Sender will show. This is where you have options. Make your choice chose “S” or “B”.
**If you want want to make a backup of your backup (to be stored in a safe place and not over written) you can find it here: C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Phone Update, this folder will most likely be hidden**

** If you notice a red error that mentions COM (I noticed it on mine) go to the “if needed install this tool” folder you moved in step 4 and open it and chose your x86 or x64 (depending on your windows version) folder and run the program inside. It will install an Engineering tool. Once this is installed repeat steps 17-19. The error should be gone.If you don’t have an error proceed**
24. Let the program run and complete what it needs to do.
25. Once the program has completed and the update was a success close it.
26. Now you need to delete the files you placed in the CAB sender folder from step 20.
27. Now repeat steps 20 through 26 replacing the “8107-8112” with “8112-8773”
28. Repeat these steps until you have completed the updates all the way to version 8862 (newest WP 7.8 15Mar2013)
29. Now you are done!

For those that just need the lastest updates release 14 and 15 March 8860 and 8862 here are the details.
1. Create 2 new folders called "8858-8860" and "8860-8862"

Sinlessearth,

Thank you very much for this tutorial. After reading through countless posts (XDA and WPCentral) on how to do this, I was still hesitant because I thought that T-Mobile would come through as they had in the past. Well...they didn't, so I bit the bullet and went through with it. It worked beautifully and I am now a happy 7.8 user.

I did run in to two stumbling blocks that I would like to mention though. First, it would be helpful if you clarified that when downloading and placing the language and software files in the appropriate folders that they remain as zip files and not to extract them. You mentioned to 'copy the 3 files' which threw me off, but I just assumed that you meant the 3 different downloads so I just continued with the install until the DOS screen told me that there were no 'update files' and could not continue. After trial and error I just put in the zip files and it worked just fine. Not a big deal, but it may help others.

Secondly (and this doesn't have to do with your instructions, but the cab itself), if you are running Windows XP (as I am) the "WP7 Update CAB Sender" will not work as is and you will get the following in the DOS screen: "'CHOICE' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file." The solution is to overwrite that CAB file with this fix: xda-developers - View Single Post - [ROM] Back to the Future [XBmod-Yuki][Updatable]Build 8107 Ready . I hope this helps the XP users out there.

Once again I want to thank you for this tutorial. It feels like a new phone and will hold me over until TMO gets a decent Nokia flagship or Microsoft comes out with a Surface phone. Take care.

I updated my HTC HD7 using sinlessearth's instructions and links and was successful at updating to 7.8.:grin: Given I'd never updated via the cab sender method I was a little concerned about mucking it up. The only problems I had was the com issue that was fixed by installing the Windows Phone Engineering Flashing Tool and an error stating that a certain dll or something similar of Zune was not installed. The issue there was that I had installed Zune in a non-default location. Once I uninstalled Zune and allowed in to reinstall in the default location (and reinstall the WP Engineering Flashing Tool), I was able to do the updates. I am very happy with the result.

thanks sinlessearth!

I am sorry but I am not an expert on this. That is why I made this for the TMO US HD7 only. Your best bet is to look on XDA because they do a lot with the HD2. I hope you get it worked out. I know the HD2 can run almost anything.

I just updated my HTC HD7 TMO US to Windows Phone 7.8 and successfully ported to my device using this exact same instructions. I figured out for 6 hours because at the first I just have 8107 version and need to update to 8112. Everything works well until it comes to 8773. I forgot to install the display language (my device use English 0409), and I need to roll back to 8112. I did the exact same thing for 4 times and successfully updated to 8858 without having any issues (wifi, about, and people hub). Sometimes it worth to try :D

Hey, will it work for the HTC Titan??
if your titan is on 8107 or above and is English only then it should. You need to make sure on the language. If you have more languages then you need to look on XDA for the other ones. I have not tried this on a titan so cannot say it works but it should if version and Lang is the same.

Thank You very much, since realistically there were no chances for 7.8 from T-mobile (we didn’t get Tango for HD7 either) I decided to follow Your tutorial and it worked seamlessly. Thanks again I’m happy owner of WP7.8 HD7

Only one question - to anybody who may knew. Not that I’m complaining or anything, but I kind of assumed that part 8112-8773 was the Tango update, still I don’t see some features expected with Tango.

I don’t see:
- SIM export,
- Location indicator (not sure about that)
- Also looks like I still have Wi-Fi to Cellular switch issue (which supposedly Tango should fix)

Anybody any ideas. Should I have them? Possibly I did something incorrectly? Where they manufactures specific features not supported by HTC?

I also don't have those features however I don't seem to have the WiFi to cellular issue anymore. I don't think you did anything wrong. It may have been a manufacturer feature but HTC left us high dry so... TMO would have if HTC didn't though. Oh and sim export? I didn't know about that one just the sim import.
