Convenience + no need to drain the phone's battery + GPS. It's popular with enterprises, and now that MS is selling to them, I guess it's one of the top requests from them.

It depends if your carrier supports the newer categories. If your carrier does support it, you can get faster speeds from your connection. I don't think US carriers have cat 6 yet, but several European and Asian ones have deployed cat 6 in the past year.
You can use the Surface Dock directly with the clipboard/screen part. Not sure if the Dock + Dock AC adapter would be small enough for travel though...
It would've been nice if the USB port in the charger was actually connected with the Surface instead of just being a charging port.

Have you tried looking at the powercfg reports? Also, Chrome drains the battery, even if only running in the background.
