I am getting so pumped for this phone! I am really looking forward to moving on from my 1520. It has been the best phone I've ever had, but the 950XL improves it in a number of areas that are important to me. (battery, rounded corners, Qi)

Also, @narv, Mozo has said that their backs will support Qi.

EDIT: Here is them stating about Qi.

So I went into the MS store last night (in Woodland Hills, California) and they had the 950 XL on display and available for demo. One of the phones had a really hideous case on it. Can't wait for the Mozo back covers to start showing up. They did have one untethered 950XL to play with. It had the white cover on the back. That phone was running Win10 Build 10546. It was pretty fast phone and I encountered zero Loading or Resuming. I opened about 17 apps in quick succession and toggled back and forth between them and not once did I encounter the dreaded Loading or Resuming screens. This thing is fast, it has 3GB of RAM and it shows!

The phone felt extremely light in the hand and quite easy to hold. It is a big device but the overall device size isn't too bad, the top and bottom bezels are quite small. The quality of the screen is top notch! I did remove the back cover and the battery and checked out the internals. Everything feels solid, the tactile feel on the buttons was really nice. Windows Hello was not demonstrated because it was assigned to one salesperson in the store and he was not on shift when I visited the store. The white matte cover is nice, especially when compared to the glossy white covers for the 640 and 640XL that they also had on display. I cannot comment on the battery life in the short time I had to play with it.

I played a video on You Tube and the audio is stellar on this device. Very impressed, despite the speaker on the back and if you put the phone face up the sound is likely to be muffled but if it is placed face down the audio quality is very nice. I played with the rear camera quite a bit. Snapped about 10 pictures with and without flash and I must say the picture quality is superb. The time to load the app is very minimal and it locks on to focus very quickly and I tapped 5 pics in quick succession like on my DSLR and there was no lag on the device! I tried out the FFC and even in a non optimal light setting environment it took really nice selfies. Also took a video and the HAAC mics picked up the complete din in the store and the mall. The video quality was very good and I did not detect a lot of jitter.

I tried Hey Cortana on it and it worked but because the store was quite loud I had to put the phone closer to my face and say Hey Cortana to the mic near the bottom of the phone - regular phone conversation microphone. You will see the two SIM card signs on the top since the phone had dual SIM slots, even if you only put one SIM card in it. In the time I played with it I did not feel the phone heat up or warm up at all FWIW.

All in all it is a solid device. Once Win10M is complete it will be interesting to see how this phone stacks up against the other big boys but a very solid first impression. They were accepting pre-orders at the store and I ordered one for myself.

But there's "one more thing":
You can also pre-order the 950 at the MS Store!! They have the SKU's for it. I have a picture of the exact SKU for the 950 which Jamie (the rep) scanned but was asked not to post it. So being a WP sucker, I pre-ordered that one as well. She said I can change my mind and decide to just buy one from the two devices but at least now I had the option of locking both of them in:)

Enjoy the pics!

Thanks for the info and pictures!

I was worried that the it might be unwieldy to hold with and use with one hand, also incredibly used to using my 920 with either hand so that's good news to me.

Feeling rather green with envy now :winktongue:, I so want to check those phones out... argh! :grincry:

Coming from a 920 myself I can tell you this felt amazing to use!

Thanks for the video. Very cool and it shows it works with glasses. I don't speak French - does anyone know if he said it works through sunglasses also or that it doesn't?

My Lumia 820 was also stolen, so after agonizing with a $80 Android device I did not have patience, so finally I got the deal of the day on this site and bought the BLU Win HD LTE at ?79.99 on Amazon. It is an excellent Windows Phone for this price, but I want Continuum in order to park my old Acer Iconia W700, which is a sort of not so good Surface Pro 2. I am an IT guy which works mostly on servers, so mainly I need Remote Desktop to manage the Windows servers, PDF Reader to read the docs, Excel to keep the timesheet, Outlook to read the email, and a lot of Internet access in order to search on Bing and Google when something goes wrong. I think all of these tasks can be made on a phone via Continuum because until now I was not able to use mainly the remote desktop on the phone, especially on old servers like Windows 2003.
I am absolutely sure I will buy a 950XL, and thanks guys you convinced me it is a good device because there are no Microsoft Stores in Romania in order to test it. I will be to a cloud training at their local site next week and probably will see the devices there, but I already know I will buy 950XL + docking device :)

Has anyone tried seeing if the Microsoft Mini Stores located inside of Best Buy locations have any of the new devices? I can't even find the 95x series mentioned on Best Buys website.

Ok, just got back from my local Best Buy. They did have the Surface 4 Pro on hand in the Microsoft Mini-store, and had a space for the Surface Book, but it was not on display yet. The Lumia section had a ladder and some boxes of surge protectors of something stacked up in front of it and it was missing a couple display items but the only phones on display were the 1520 and the 7xx series i think. A few dummy units but the 1520 was on and working. No sign of the 9xx series of the new 550.

Well so much for trying to sneak the Lumia 950 by on pre-order!

Hello Mr. Worldspy99,

Our records indicated that you requested to pre-order the Microsoft Lumia 950. Unfortunatly, at this time, we are unable to fulfill your request. The Lumia 950 is not currently available in our region. However, you still have the option of the Microsoft Lumia 950XL which will be available soon. Let me know if you would like me to change the request order for your 950 to the 950XL. Pre-orders are still free, and will guarantee you a copy when it’s released. Let me know what you decide.

Best,

I checked out the 950 XL yesterday in a Silicon Valley Microsoft Store and it's a nice phone... but as expected, I found it was far too large for me.

Unfortunately, they didn't have a 950 on display. Which is the phone I'm really interested in.

I'm going to check it out tomorrow. I'm getting the sense that none of the Microsoft stores have the Lumia 950 yet. We'll see.

I stopped by the Microsoft Store at Yorkdale Mall in Toronto earlier this evening. The 950XL does look pretty good in person, not exciting, but genuinely a "clean" look. Here's a poor quality shot of my 1520 and the 950XL side by side courtesy of my Samsung ATIV S.

I didn't dig too much into the software, but I switched it from 4 columns of medium tiles to 3. The display does look really nice.

The only thing that stood out to me negatively was software related. I went to change the background picture, and it opened the camera roll, which was super slow to load.

Also, I was constantly trying to press the non-existent capacitive back and windows keys. I've never tried a software button windows phone before, and there is definitely a learning curve to re-wire your brain and develop a new habit of swiping up on the bottom of the display.

I checked the XL at my local MS store this evening and I was very surprised that it is very light in weight compared to my 1520. It is a lot smaller in size than the 1520 which to me is my only disappointment but other than that it is a beautiful phone and does not look or feel like a cheap phone so I went ahead and pre ordered the black one. It is going to be a Christmas gift to myself

I asked the salesgirl if AT$T was going to carry it and she said yes but I would rather buy it unlocked from MS and don't have the greedy at$t logo on my phone.

Played with the 950XL today, Wow!

From a pure tech standpoint, this phone is amazing. Played with one at an MS store and was incredibly impressed.

Screen clarity was awesome, camera seemed really good, the phone felt incredibly light and not too big at all. I love the new OS, incredibly clean and silky smooth. It made me want to use the phone.

This thing will be a beast of a device. If this is where MS is heading with their phones, we could have a three horse race after all!
