My 950XL is my first phablet, and I am not sure if I like such a large device to carry around daily. I only have a few more days to decide to keep it or trade for a 950.
Is there any real performance difference between the two?

There should be since the processors are different. But for most day to day tasks this shouldn't be that evident. Games, photo processing is where you would see some difference.

The size difference in the phones is pretty tiny from everything I've seen (which is why I chose the xl, the 3mm to 6mm difference every direction was negligible)

I just picked up a 950XL, with the express intent of selling it, and at some point finding a 950. Now that I am holding it in my hand, it doesn't feel as big as it looks. I am going out of town for a week starting Sunday, so I may used the XL as my primary phone while I'm gone, and then decide afterwards whether or not I keep it.

Pretty impressive phone though.

That's the funny part. What seem like minor differences can seem huge at times. I have a 640, and I do like the feel in hand. The 950 is almost the same, just taller.

I'm doing the opposite.. thinking of changing my 950 for an XL. The 950 is already pretty big to handle, so my thinking is I might as well get the extra screen real estate of the XL...

I don't know how long you've had the XL, but give it ~2 weeks if you can. That's about when my 1520 started to feel normal.

The extra cores on the processor in the XL will provide a speed boost mostly when using very intensive applications/functions - that means only a select few apps/games and Continuum. I haven't read about any noticeable performance differences otherwise. The larger battery in the XL is also probably mostly negated by the larger-size display it must power.

At first it seemed odd to me that the XL wouldn't have additional distinguishing specs, but I have come to respect a bit what Microsoft did: it gave users the option of having nearly identical performance levels and instead they choose their phone based on desired size.
