Help Me Switch From iOS To Windows 10 Mobile

So looks like it's down to the wire. I've got the rest of this week to say goodbye to iOS. It's been a good run, kid. It's not you, it's me.

So what I want to know is... what should I do? I am a total noob at changing phones. As an iPhone user, I can't even count the number of times I've ported all my data and settings from one iPhone to another but obviously that option is not available to me this time around. I'm sure a number of you guys are experienced at jumping between phones, so I'm looking for some tips and advice. Things not to forget, things to export, backup, send to the cloud, write down, scribe into stone tablets, etc.

I know on Android there's a switch to Windows phone app. There might be something similar to that on iOS app store?

Best thing to do is jump into the MS ecosystem, and fully use Outlook.com (email/contacts/calendar), and OneDrive for data storage. There may be a way to export your text messages, but those may be locked into iOS's walled garden, not sure. You need to backup your pictures somehow, hopefully you've been using OneDrive for that?

I'm all over the map with cloud backup solutions. I use Gdrive, DropBox, OneDrive, and my own NAS cloud server all for different things, lol. I don't know how it ended up this way, but I should probably put some thought into consolidation. I also use gmail and Hotmail exclusively, both of which are already tied into Outlook, and I have the iOS calendar hooked into Outlook as well, so I'm all good there. My iOS notes go to gmail automatically, as well.

Most importantly, I have not/do not use iCloud or iDrive for anything.

Retaining text message history would be really nice, if anyone knows a way. I hadn't thought of that one.

First of all... Get yourself unhooked from iMessage. After the fact it is a PITA by all accounts and your messaging gets all FUBARed.

Then get your contacts switched into Skype as much as possible. Unlike iMessage, Skype is available cross platform. Send out invites to Skype to close family/friends/business associates to make sure they are connected to you. Start some Skype chatrooms. I love how my Skype conversations are continuous across Laptop. Tablet and Phone.

Hit the forums and find out what users like best for Apps. I think one thing you may want to look at is Camera. TONS of camera Apps for clicking and post shot editing. Explore DNG capture as well.

LOL That is probably more than you wanted to know. Not sure how many of the above had made it onto the store for Win 10 Mo. Worth looking though, IMHO.

HERE works well across devices too.

I wonder about HERE on Windows going forward. They've only talked about iOS and Android recently. Great post btw.

If we could get HERE back on the WP App store it would be great.

Curious to see if HERE is baked into Win 10 Mo. I bet not, since Maps is supposed to draw off HERE from 10 Mobile onward. I LOVE my HERE on phone.

When trip planning I mark all possible sights in HERE on PC inside "Collections" and sync it over for use on the phone in the field. Invaluable that. Combined with OneNote syncing I have everything I need on my phone from my trip planning on PC.

Also, Microsoft has a webpage dedicated to this very topic as well. As for HERE, the new mapping IS HERE, just not named it anymore. But they are still using the same system etc for it.

And to the OP, welcome to windows phone. I switched from IOS ages ago and its soooo much better, besides the app 'gap'.
