Lumia 920 vs 950 Camera Comparison (2013 vs 2016)

I was clicking refresh on all of these 950 firmware threads, waiting to see what I should do to get mine to update, when all of a sudden I notice that I received a bunch of likes to a post I made in 2013. (see this post)

In that thread, I uploaded a night picture taken from my balcony right around the same time of the year, after just having purchased a 920, 3 years ago.

Having a 950 in hand, I figured why not do a comparison between the two!

Here they are back to back. The 2013 image has yellow incandescent lights (my city has since then upgraded to LEDs,) and the there has been some development in the area also.

In both images, the camera was set to 200ISO, and rested on the railing. All other settings were left on auto.

You should retake the picture with the 920 now that your city has new lights.

It's like that game where you try to spot the differences, like the new building in the center of the picture. Most areas look better in the second photo. Cool comparison!

There seems to be better detail and less noise with the 950, but it's hard to be certain without photos being taken back to back. Those LED street lamps make a big impact on lighting. There's a bit too much blurring with the 950; I'm not sure if that's the software issue or if the phone wasn't completely steady.

In terms of overall lighting I much prefer the 920. I suppose it's appealing that the 950 is able to brighten a night scene like that, but I'm not a fan. It lacks too much contrast and looks less natural. Although, I expect that can be addressed by tweaking manual settings.

2nd pic lighting looks artificial, maybe more detail but not as pleasing to look at as the first.
