I have Office 2016 (Preview) installed on my SP3 & it works great. I later have downloaded the Mobile version from the store & installed it also on my Surface. When I open up the mobile version, it allows me to open a document, but only in Read Only mode. It offers an opportunity to Activate my Office 365 subscription, which I don't have & won't purchase or I can dismiss it. If I dismiss it, it stays in Read Only mode & can do no editing.
Since I plan on purchasing the stand alone Office 2016 (Not the Office 365 subscription) will I ever be able to use the mobile version on my desktop?
