Why are the numbers on my Surface Pro only typing symbols?

I'm using a Surface Pro with Windows 8 and trying to log in and every time I try to log in with my password that contains numbers, when I type a "3" it shows up as a "#" instead. This occurs both on the touch screen and using the keyboard. When using the touch screen it occurs both when I am looking at the standard alphabetical keyboard (when I hold down the letter to select the three) and when I switch to the numerical keyboard. HELP!! I can't use my device
