Lumia Camera beta asking for denim update when 1020 has denim update

The easiest way to look at it is like this:

It doesn't have the denim firmware, only the latest Lumia models do.

It does however have the o/s update that was released as denim.

The denim update consists of two parts, firmware and o/s update, older phones just got the o/s update and some under the hood tweaks. Not a complete overhaul.

There is however a silver lining, Rich Capture has been incorporated into the Camera app on WM10 and as such all WM10 phones will get Rich Capture (according to Juha Alakarhu all Windows 10 devices will have the same camera & photo experience).
