I've just installed WP10, (firmware 02540.00019.15234.50005), and wanted to know if this is the official firmware and not the insider tech preview and if I'm able to go back to WP8.1 if it is the official one.

I'm installing an update via WPRT right now to my 1520.3. My connection is slow so it will take some time. I'm investigating/confirming but it looks like new Firmware for 8.1 Update + Denim. I'll know for certain later.

It may be prep for W10M.

Remember though, W10M will be coming soon and when it hits WPRT there will be no way to revert to 8.1 by WPRT. You'd need Nokia Care Suite and NaviFirm. WPRT will only ever give the latest official.

My 1520.3 is running 8.1 Update + Denim. (8.10.14234.375) It has never been on Insider or Preview before that. Always official. A manual check showed no updates.

WPRT updated itself to 3.1.5 for me today. The changelog over 3.1.4 showed only bug fixes. I plugged into USB and see this:

Note that my Firmware version is slightly higher than what was shown to the OP in the 3rd group of digits. I made my backup and installed the update. It was a 1.62GB package.

The update forced me into setup when the phone rebooted.

motion data, touch and call + SMS filter all received updates. I can tell because I have the old school Settings menu where it is all one column and the most recently updated items fall to the bottom of the list. I had an OTA Hey Cortana uodate 2 days ago and now the 3 listed are beneath that.

In about, I see the same OS version number as before (8.10.14234.375) and the promised new Firmware revision number shown in the pic above.

I really do suspect that this is prep work for 10 and if it is that bodes well.

To the OP. For now, your should be able to revert to 8.1 using WPRT.

Update 2 is not coming to any 1520 variant officially.

I believe the get on Insider > get Update 2 > abort Insider loophole has been closed.

Yes it has, I tried "insider" app and it took me straight to Win10 mobile. Of course that was point, but there was no stop over at 8.1 update 2. I wonder if TP for developers still works?

This is what I get when I try to go back to 8.1 from W10 using Windows Device Recovery Tool with my L1520.
I had the same issue with my old 640XL, just didn't want to let it install the FW & OS because I wasn't sure what it was. I am pretty sure that is WP 8 though, that said I didn't try WP 10 on my new 1520 yet mostly because I don't want to get trapped on it if it doesn't run as smoothly as WP 8.1 has been, with my 640XL running WP10 I found battery life wasn't nearly as good, most times when I tapped on a incoming text message from the lock screen it would hang at "resuming" which drove me crazy, if MS could get those two issues under control I'd probably go back to WP10..
