L1520 on 8.1 vs. 10

Howdy!

I have a white L1520 that I purchased on WC Marketplace a while back and love, love, LOVE it! I updated it to be on the Fast-Ring Insider so I could get the newest WMobile 10 update as possible. I know it will no longer be getting any updates.

I really do not use my phone like most people do. I pretty much only use the built-in apps and the few apps I have downloaded and tried out, I never really used them other than a puzzle game now and then.

I really despise how the flow/touch keyboard in WM10 functions. It is TERRIBLE! I loved it in WM8.1, though. I'm thinking of going back to WM8.1 pretty much for the better keyboard. What problems, if any, do you all think I'll run into if I go back? I'll miss using Edge, but other than that, I can't think of anything that I'll be missing since I don't really use any apps other than the built-in ones.

What do you other L1520 users think? How many of you are sticking with WM8.1 on your L1520's, and why? Thanks, and have a GREAT day!

Well I am not exactly a Lumia 1520 user, but from experience I had on Lumia 640 XL on 8.1 and later on 10, I think it runs 8.1 a lot smoother even if 10 might be superior because it offers universal apps and other features you can't find on 8.1 (for example I highly despise 8.1 settings because I can't navigate them).

I think you should ask yourself what do you want - the extra features from a system that will get no updates for your device or a lot better and optimised experience using your phone with less features on a system it was designed to run than you get from W10M.

Hope I helped you.

The Lumia 1520 was a beast of a phone back in the day and holds up incredible well today.
My personal use of it enables me to say that Windows 10 Mobile flies on the phone especially when compared to budget phones like the Lumia 640 and Lumia 735.

Having said this, I feel like you will lose a lot in terms of functionality by going back to WP8.1

For one, you won't be able to use any of the Universal apps which if built correctly functions amazingly well.
There are plenty of apps that are "Built for Windows 10" that just won't work on WP8.1

2. Facebook and Messenger are no longer supported in WP8.1

So for me, W10M is the way to go.

That's the thing with me and how I use my phone - I don't really download and use any apps. The only app I've downloaded and use infrequently is "7 Little Words". I am probably the worst smart-phone user on the planet because the built-in apps are plenty for how little I use the smart-features.

Yesterday I did purchase an additional L1520 from WCmarketplace, so when it arrives I'll use 8.1 on it for a while and see if I'm missing anything enough to outweigh how much better the swipe keyboard on 8.1 is.

I actually preferred using W10M on my 1520 than WP8.1. With the display scaling features and the new email app, W10M runs a lot better on the 1520 than 8.1 did. In fact due to the reduced animations, W10 feels faster on the 1520 to such an extent that it feels like the 1520 was made to run W10M out of the box and not 8.1

Indeed I did receive it today, and I just spent the last few hours getting it all set up and playing around with it!

I now have:
L1520 - white - RM-940 (WM10)
L1520 - yellow - RM-938 (WM8.1)
L925

Now that I have two L1520's and 8.1 on one and 10 on the other, I'll play around with them both side by side and see how it goes and what I think.

So far what I've been using the 8.1 phone for, it has been more than enough for my limited use needs. I also MUCH more prefer the WAY better swipe keyboard on 8.1 than how HORRIBLE it is on WM10. Since I now have one with both OS's, I'll keep using and comparing them, but I'm pretty satisfied with 8.1. :)

I think 8.1 + Denim is the sweet spot for this phone and if the Store doesn't deteriorate too much (i.e. core and accessory Msft Apps remain available) there is no reason not to leave a 1520 on that OS version.

Also, the camera experience, for me, seemed better on 8.1 than on W10M. Better processing algorithms and faster shot times with less overall hassle. @kdk24z do yourself a favor, if you have not done so already, and get ProShot Classic on there. Camera360 Sight is another app that uses the camera very well on 1520.

I kept it on 5MP JPG + 16MP DNG for Lumia Camera and used the heck out of the generous DNG files for use with Rawer and also post shot processing on PC.

ProShot has some very nice granular controls and Sight is a fast shooter even when capturing 16MP JPG...

I admit that I'm pretty ignorant of what is available and what can be done with a TREASURE like the L1520. I will definitely check out the apps you mentioned. I mostly take photos and videos of my ADORABLE *****-kitty, and I am by no means an enthusiast photographer. I just LOVE the L1520, and also my *****-kitty! Thanks again for the WONDERFUL L1520!!!!

Well, last night I decided to update to WM10 on my second L1520. I've been comparing the two L1520's I have, one with 8.1 and one with 10, and even though I prefer the SUPERIOR swipe keyboard on 8.1, I was missing Edge too much. IE was just crashing on me too much, and it rarely ever does on 10. I'll be going with 10 for my "daily driver", and I can always revert my other L1520 to 8.1 if I want.
