Hey,

Does anyone know if we can connect an external hard disk drive with the Nokia 2520? Will the micro-USB port provide sufficient power to power a USB 3.0 based 2.5/3.5" portable hard disk with a micro-USB to full USB connector?

I know that an externally powered hard disk works, just wanted to know if the USB powered ones too will work.? Pl let know.

I am going to micro USB 3.0 to USB 3.0 then a female usb 3.0 to female USB 3.0 to get my USB 3.0 port.

There is no full size USB like the surface.. its a mini USB as per the spec..

I don't think think, external hard drives use micro USB 3.0 vs 2.0 because it must offer similar speeds to full size port.

The USB port can charge a phone, but u need micro USB 2 male connectors at both ends, or use the micro to full size usb3 adaptors as noted by other posts.

Per Nokia FAQ:
Your tablet supports charging only through the dedicated charging connector, not through the USB connector. As a USB host your tablet can provide power for USB accessories connected to it, you can for example charge your phone from Lumia 2520.

I don't have a USB 3 HD but I do have a 500GB USB 2 Seagate FreeAgent Go drive and it works just fine. I tested a 2.5 hour HD movie and it only took 40% of the battery charge.

Finally I got to test my Lumia 2520 with various list of USB devices.

Amazon.com : Afunta 15CM Standard USB3.0 Female to Micro USB 3.0 Male OTG(On-The-Go) Cable for Samsung Galaxy Note3 N9000 N9002 N9005 : Computer Cable Usb To Usb Adapters : Computers & Accessories

I used the above connector. Thanks to GizmoEV and Robertre and daelumia for their suggestions. Here is the list of devices I found working with my tablet

  • Seagate 1 TB HDD USB 3.0 and it works (USB powered)
  • 8GB, 16G USB drives
  • A multi-card reader
The list will be updated with more later today.
