What is that little slit at the top front of the device?

What is that little slit at the top front of the device?
I forced it with a knife trying to open the back before i find the correct way... and i'm afraid of having compromised some component.

that is where you put your thumb so that you can pop the shell off..

No, your thumb goes in between that black bezel and the shell. The speaker may be on the back, but that speaker on the front is for phone calls.
